Potion Command Generator
Create potion, splash potion, lingering potion, and tipped arrow commands.
How to use
Choose the potion type and effect first. Splash, lingering and tipped-arrow outputs are different items.
Basic fallback generator
A simplified form is available while the main generator loads. It does not include every setting in the full tool.
Output
Custom potion and effect differences
A potion is an item, while /effect directly applies a status effect to a target. Use the Potion tool for item data and the Effect tool for commands.
Examples and checks
- Choose the correct Minecraft version before adding components.
- Check duration and amplifier separately.
- Test custom colors and names in a backup world.
Potions, splash potions and tipped arrows
Choose the item first: a normal potion, a splash potion, a lingering potion, or a tipped arrow. Then pick the effect, its level and how long it lasts.
In Java 1.20.5 and later, effects are stored in potion_contents. Duration is in ticks, so 1200 ticks is one minute. Level 0 means level I.
If the command does not work
- If the potion shows as uncraftable or has no effect, check that the selected version matches your game.
- Very long or very strong effects can make the game hard to play. Start with small numbers.
- Bedrock Edition cannot store custom effects in a potion item. Use the effect generator instead.
Copy-ready potion examples (Java 1.20.5 and later)
| Goal | Command |
|---|---|
| Potion of Swiftness | /give @p minecraft:potion[potion_contents={potion:"minecraft:swiftness"}] |
| Stronger or longer version | minecraft:strong_swiftness or minecraft:long_swiftness |
| Three splash potions of Healing | /give @p minecraft:splash_potion[potion_contents={potion:"minecraft:healing"}] 3 |
| Arrows of Slowness | /give @p minecraft:tipped_arrow[potion_contents={potion:"minecraft:slowness"}] 16 |
| Custom effect: Speed V for 5 minutes | /give @p minecraft:potion[potion_contents={custom_effects:[{id:"minecraft:speed",amplifier:4,duration:6000}]}] |
amplifier is the level minus one and duration is in ticks (20 per second). On 1.20.4 and earlier the item data used NBT, for example /give @p minecraft:potion{Potion:"minecraft:swiftness"}. If you get a water bottle, the potion name is wrong.
Bedrock Edition
Bedrock /give cannot hold custom effects. Use /effect @p speed 60 1 to apply an effect directly.
