Smithing templates and armour trims
Choose whether you want the template item itself or a finished piece of trimmed armour. Templates are used in a smithing table; trimmed armour is ready to wear.
Trimmed armour uses the trim component in Java 1.20.5 and later, for example /give @p minecraft:diamond_chestplate[trim={pattern:"minecraft:sentry",material:"minecraft:gold"}] 1.
If the command does not work
- Armour trims were added in Java 1.20. Older versions do not have them.
- Some patterns, such as newer trims, only exist in recent versions. Check the version selector.
- The trim material changes the colour. Gold, diamond, emerald and others each look different.
Copy-ready smithing examples (Java)
| Goal | Command |
|---|---|
| Netherite upgrade template | /give @p minecraft:netherite_upgrade_smithing_template |
| A trim template | /give @p minecraft:sentry_armor_trim_smithing_template |
| Trimmed armor, 1.20.5 and later | /give @p minecraft:diamond_chestplate[trim={pattern:"minecraft:sentry",material:"minecraft:gold"}] |
| Trimmed armor, 1.20–1.20.4 | /give @p minecraft:diamond_chestplate{Trim:{pattern:"minecraft:sentry",material:"minecraft:gold"}} |
Trim patterns include sentry, dune, coast, wild, ward, eye, vex, tide, snout, rib, spire, wayfinder, shaper, silence, raiser, host, flow and bolt. Materials include iron, copper, gold, lapis, emerald, diamond, netherite, redstone, amethyst and quartz. Trim templates are named after the pattern, such as minecraft:silence_armor_trim_smithing_template.
Bedrock Edition
Bedrock cannot give pre-trimmed armor with /give. Give the template, the armor and the material, then combine them at a smithing table.
