How the /tp command works
The basic form is /tp <target> <x> <y> <z>. The target is who moves, and the three numbers are where they go. To move a player to another player, use /tp <target> <player> instead.
Three kinds of coordinates
- Absolute:
/tp @p 0 80 0always sends the player to the same place in the world. - Relative (~):
/tp @s ~ ~5 ~moves the player 5 blocks up from where they are now. - Local (^):
/tp @s ^ ^ ^5moves the player 5 blocks in the direction they are facing.
Setting the direction after teleporting
Add two numbers after the coordinates to set the rotation, for example /tp @p 0 80 0 90 0. The first number turns left and right, the second looks up and down. You can also use facing to make the player look at a point or an entity.
Common problems
- The player gets stuck in blocks: the Y value is lower than the ground. Check the height with the F3 screen first.
- Nothing happens from a command block:
@smeans the command block itself. Use/execute as @p at @s run tp @s ~ ~5 ~instead. - Moving to another dimension: in Java Edition, use
/execute in minecraft:the_nether run tp @p 0 80 0.
Bedrock Edition uses the same basic form, so /tp @p 0 80 0 works in both editions.
