Minecraft Command Error Doctor
Paste a command and check the most common reasons for unknown or incomplete command errors. This is a browser-only diagnostic helper; it does not send your command to a server.
What this checks
It checks missing slash, unbalanced brackets, unbalanced quotes, likely Java/Bedrock mismatch, old NBT mixed with new components, selector mistakes and commands that may be too destructive to run without testing. It also flags syntax that changed in recent Java updates: item NBT in { } (changed in 1.20.5), clickEvent/hoverEvent (1.21.5) and old game rule names (1.21.11).

What the diagnostic can and cannot prove
The checker inspects the text of a command. It can detect suspicious punctuation, unbalanced brackets, missing quotes and signs of mixed Java and Bedrock syntax. It cannot know whether a player has operator permissions, whether a target entity exists, or whether a destination in your world is safe.
- Test a short command first, for example
/give @p minecraft:stone 1. - If that works, paste the failing command into the checker and examine the highlighted punctuation or version warning.
- Remove optional item components or entity data and try the command again. Restore one option at a time to identify the mismatch.
Java 1.20.5+ item components do not use the same syntax as older item NBT. Bedrock syntax differs again. A message from this tool is a diagnostic suggestion, not confirmation of in-game execution.
Typical broken commands and their fixes
| Broken | Problem | Fixed |
|---|---|---|
/give @p diamond_sword{Unbreakable:1b} | Old item NBT on Java 1.20.5+ | /give @p diamond_sword[unbreakable={}] |
/effect give @p speed 30 1 | Java syntax in Bedrock | /effect @p speed 30 1 |
/tp @a[distance=..10 0 64 0 | Selector bracket not closed | /tp @a[distance=..10] 0 64 0 |
/gamerule keepInventory true | Old game rule name on Java 1.21.11+ | /gamerule minecraft:keep_inventory true |
FAQ
Is my command sent anywhere?
No. The check runs entirely in your browser and nothing is uploaded.
The checker finds nothing, but the game still shows an error. What next?
Read where the red text starts in the chat box; the problem is at or just before that point. Then compare the item, entity or effect ID with the ID search, and check the guide Unknown or incomplete command.
